After
- several weeks of hardly running
- two weeks of not running at all
- one killer massage by a wonderful LMT
- a few go-rounds on the bike
- and many, many treats later...
I think the niggles will soon be completely behind me.
What exactly was wrong with my leg, I may never know for sure. A tendon issue in my left foot (heel and outside arch) from October never went away when I rested it in November. Then a knee issue cropped up in the same leg after a very long, but easy, run. Maybe it was just careless training or a domino effect injury. Regardless, I figured it was either run and get better, or don't run and get better.
Running was not getting it better, so I gave in and stopped running for a while.
I did my own formula of PT, ice and heat, and am ready to start over.
Today I ran.
It wasn't far or fast;
but,
It was perfect.

ah, I've been thinking of you a lot today. Wondering what you've been up to and how we lost touch so much. Thinking of your sweet card and mail before my marathon. Ugg on the niggle and injury. But YES on the run today. No matter how far or how fast...it WAS running! Love your diagram here! You're awesome.
ReplyDeleteWoohoo for a run!!! :)
ReplyDeleteGlad you had a great run. Injuries suck! Hope you continue to run injury free. The diagram was cracking me up, but it is spot on!
ReplyDeleteHope you are back!
ReplyDeleteLike the flow chart - glad you're back!
ReplyDeleteGreat news! So glad to hear the run was perfect. Here's to many many more!
ReplyDeleteYay! Getting back after a forced break is amazing! Makes you realize how much you love it. I hope those niggles are gone for good!
ReplyDeleteYay for running again!!
ReplyDeleteThat chart is spot on
Great news!!! That chart is perfect!
ReplyDeleteOh Raina! You have that way of making any situation humorous!! I'm so glad you got a run in and you're bouncing back!! Injury is so frustrating....especially the unknown. Hope your immediate future holds MANY beautiful, peaceful, PERFECT Oregon runs!!!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that you were going through all of this Raina. I am so sorry! Glad that you were smart and took the time off so that you could recover. The first run back post injury is always the hardest because our expectations are so high. Take it easy on yourself. The running will get easier. Of course this is all easy stuff to say to another runner, rather than tell ourselves. :-)
ReplyDeleteXXXXX
The flow chart is funny, though I'm sorry you've been working your way through it. It sounds like you've been smart and you're so talented the "fast" will be back quickly now that you've properly healed.
ReplyDeleteLove the chart. So true. Welcome back to the roads!!!!
ReplyDeleteHaving been on the receiving end of a heel and arch issue for - eternitty - I feel your pain (literally :)) about not being able to run for awhile. Glad to hear that things are healing up and you're back out there, even small steps running feel wonderful after a period of time off. You'll get back to full force soon, what's what you do best!
ReplyDeleteIt feels great to be able to run again after having to take off from it. Have fun running!
ReplyDeleteI am happy that you had a perfect run! That chart is hilarious and so true:)
ReplyDeleteExcellent chart!! So glad you were able to run and I hope that you feel stronger with each day.
ReplyDeleteYAY!!!!!!! Now, onward! :)
ReplyDeleteVery happy for you Raina!!! Nothing feels better than that first time back out! As you say, it was perfect! (Great diagram!)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, that niggle thing is too funny and so true! I'm so glad you're feeling better and got a run in!
ReplyDeleteI love the cartoon/diagram! That's awesome! Glad you were able to run even if it was a short distance. You'll be good as new in no time!
ReplyDeleteHurray! :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome flow chart, too.
Nice! Congrats on your pain free run! I'm hoping to be as lucky on Saturday. ☺☺
ReplyDeleteUmmm, yeaaah...
ReplyDeleteI can relate to this post!! Hey, if I can run pain free, then you'll be just fine:)
I am glad you had a run and it was good
ReplyDeleteHope you will stay pain free
You were so smart to take a break
A real break
I'm sorry Raina. that is abummer, but great news you ran TODAY!
ReplyDeletei seem to always get lazy with rolling etc and then it catches up with me and it's too late...when will I ever learn?
xxx
I know the feeling of this blog post. I have had thigh issues...try not to ever run back to back days....keep my pace low....etc....
ReplyDeleteSo happy your feeling better...take it slow.... Way to go! Yay!
This flow chart is awesome. Sorry to hear that you've been having a few road bumps, injuries are so dang frustrating!
ReplyDeletePain free run in a very good sign though... more of those to come for you!
Hi, I found you from SeeMomRunFar's blog and I love your outlook on running, life and your faith. I'm sorry that you are injured. I am just coming off my own injury and trying to get ready for Boston at the same time, so I know how frustrating it can be. Wishing you some pain free running!
ReplyDeleteYAY for a run!! What a wonderful feeling! I hope you continue to be pain free!
ReplyDeleteGreat news that you're back on the road (fields, trails, wherever). I'm an advocate for 'running through' niggles - luckily (genes?) haven't had too many full-blown injuries in the last 30 years - 3 weeks off at most I think. Sometimes I think I'm just too conservative a trainer.
ReplyDeleteSo glad the niggle was sorted by rest, there is nothing more frustrating for a runner than not running and no one wants to take the advice to rest:)
ReplyDeleteNothing better than that first run after some time off. Glad to see you're back! Hope you have no further issues.
ReplyDeleteLove the chart, so true! Yup! So happy you are back running! Excited to hear about your adventures!
ReplyDeleteSO glad you're back in the game. I've been checking your blog often for a new post! I'll be praying that the 'niggles' and anything else of that nature stays away =)
ReplyDeletePerfect sounds pretty great! yay!!!!
ReplyDeleteHoly cow that flow chart is awesome.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you are running again! Yay!
ReplyDeleteSo happy to read that you are running again. Now take it easy and don't be in hurry, this is the secret to be as fast as before. Unfortunately I never followed this simple rule but I am sure you are smarter than me.
ReplyDeleteAll the best!
Glad you got a run in!! I LOVED your chart. haha. So so so true. Hope you stay injury free...
ReplyDeleteThe flow chart is pretty accurate! Glad your niggles are feeling better. Feel free to diagnose mine, lol. Hooray for running again!!
ReplyDeleteYay, it must feel wonderful to be back running, your patience and TLC has paid off. If you're anything like me (which you probably are) life wouldn't be worth living if you couldn't run. So here's sending you good vibes for a full recovery. Listen to your body, forget the streaking and run for the love of it. It's what we do!
ReplyDeleteI love the visual you created. So true. Many of us crazy runners are on an endless cycle of run too much, rest not enough, feel pain, keep running, back of some but not enough... And then eventually we figure out little things like resting more, strengthening out the weaker parts, foam rolling, cross training, etc. Hope things are starting to feel back to normal!
ReplyDeletethat flow chart is the story of my running life. Glad you are running again
ReplyDeleteYes! Staying on the DL is just no fun, so I'm happy for you. The chart is too funny and all too accurate!
ReplyDeleteThat's AWESOME! And yep, sounds just about right.
ReplyDeleteI've been on and off since February. Had a strained tendon in the back of my knee (the pain is mostly on and off). But now, unfortunately, I'm taking time off due to some back pain. Can't wait to start running again. Don't care so much about racing at this point, just want to start hitting the trails again.
